Nearly a hundred thousand people march against communal fascism

‘Save Democracy’ Rally in Patna

EVEN AS communal tension in the country was peaking to its zenith, Patna witnessed nearly a lakh people marching with red flags on 14 March, a day before the VHP-Vajpayee joint charade at Ayodhya, with the slogan Save democracy from communal fascism. Speaking at the mammoth mass meeting held at Gandhi Maidan where the rally culminated, Party General Secretary Com. Dipankar Bhattacharya said that the Vajpayee Govt. posed a great danger to national unity, democracy and secularism. He called upon the people to overthrow the Vajpayee Govt. If the Ram temple were to be built in Ayodhya on a pile of corpses, it would certainly hurt the sentiments of all religious people, and in that case, would become a symbol of shame, he said. He said that the country will never pardon these saffron traitors who have, acting as agents of George Bush, waged war on the Muslims. Terming the Gujarat massacre as “state-sponsored political violence” and demanding ouster of the Narendra Modi Govt., he said that the people of the country should come forward to provide relief and arrange for rehabilitation of the riot-affected families. He announced Rs. 1 lakh to be sent from the rally to the Gujarat victims. He also announced the Party’s plan to launch a People’s Unity Campaign on 4-10 May, 2002. The rally was organised to oppose communal frenzy and violence as well as the mafia-police raj which is well-entrenched in Bihar. Com. Ashok Manohar, General Secretary of the Lal Nishan Party (Leninist) also addressed the rally. A magnificent and well-decorated Loktantra Bachao rath moved at the head of the rally, while rallyists raised slogans like “Stop the Mandir politics!”, “Stop killing in the name of Ram”, “Down with the police-goonda raj”, “We’ll build a new Bihar”, etc.
