CPIML MP Demands Urgent Action Over Mounting Railway Disasters

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CPI(ML) Liberation MP from Ara (Bihar) and member of Railway Standing Committee, Sudama Prasad, has demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the recent derailment of the Bengaluru-Kamakhya Superfast Express near Nergundi station in Odisha’s Cuttack district on 30 March. The tragedy, which has once again laid bare the growing crisis in Indian Railways, has prompted renewed calls for accountability, ministerial responsibility, and the safety of millions of passengers.

In the letter dated April 1, Sudama Prasad highlighted that as per the reports over 200 major railway accidents have occurred in the last five years alone, claiming 351 lives. “This is not a mere statistic,” the MP wrote, “it is the utter failure of governance and an alarming reflection of the state’s indifference to the lives of ordinary citizens.”

The letter, addressed directly to the Prime Minister, questions the criminal silence of the Union Government, which has consistently refused to take accountability for recurring accidents. Despite repeated concerns raised in the Parliamentary Committee on Railways and in various communications, Sudama noted that “no concrete action has been taken.”

The MP slammed what he called the government’s blatant disregard for parliamentary suggestions, accusing the regime of treating these frequent tragedies with cold apathy. “The refusal to act decisively,” he wrote, “is not just negligence, it is culpability.”
