AISA candidate Comrade Yuvraj Singh was elected University Representative (UR) in the students’ union elections at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Srinagar (Uttarakhand), defeating the ABVP candidate by 1,153 votes. Yuvraj Singh secured 2,979 votes.
AISA also contested the Vice-President’s post, where its candidate Comrade Preeti Verma secured 2,046 votes and finished second.
The AISA campaign was conducted with a team of ordinary students and centred on issues of education and employment, on which the organisation has been conducting struggles throughout the year. The result, AISA said, is a victory for these issues and for genuine student representation.
The victory comes after AISA’s Comrade Shivank Nautiyal had won the Vice-President’s post last year. AISA said the victory had generated strong opposition from the ruling establishment, which sought to defeat the organisation through various means. The latest result, it said, demonstrates the students’ continued support for AISA and its politics of student rights.
AISA congratulated Comrade Yuvraj Singh and the entire team on the victory, while also welcoming Comrade Preeti Verma’s strong performance. It said both representatives would continue to raise students’ issues within and outside the students’ union and contribute to the struggle for a better society.
