The first Migrant Workers Rights Convention, held in Delhi on September 13, launched the Pravasi Shramik Adhikar Manch (Migrant Workers’ Rights Forum) under AICCTU. The convention marked an important step towards defending the rights and interests of migrant workers, one of the most insecure, exploited and vulnerable sections of the Indian working class.
The growing insecurity, exploitation and denial of rights faced by migrant workers across the country underline the urgent need for such a platform. Leading activists of the CPIML Liberation, AIARLA and AICCTU, along with migrant worker representatives from different sectors and states, came together in Delhi to initiate an organised nationwide effort to strengthen the struggle for migrant workers’ rights, dignity and social security.
The conference was addressed by CPI(ML) General Secretary Comrade Dipankar, AICCTU national president Comrade Shankar, AICCTU general secretary Comrade Rajeev, senior progressive advocate Comrade Clifton, AIARLA general secretary Comrade Dhirendra Jha, CPI(ML) MLA Comrade Sandeep Saurav, MLC Comrade Shashi Yadav, former MLA Comrade Vinod Singh and Comrade Mehboob Alam.
The convention highlighted the necessity of ensuring that migrant workers, irrespective of their state of origin or place of work, are able to access their statutory rights, social security and dignified working and living conditions.
A 24-member National Convening Committee of the Pravasi Shramik Adhikar Manch was formed at the Convention. The committee will coordinate the platform’s work and take forward the struggle for the rights of migrant workers.
