BJP-RSS Govt Steps Up Repression Against YouTubers and People’s Science Activists in West Bengal

The CPI(ML) Liberation West Bengal State Committee has condemned the arrests of YouTuber Deepak Byapari, People’s Science activist Surajit Shee and Jadavpur University alumnus Akash Sarkar, along with Sreemoyee Chakraborty, who has since been released on bail. The Party has demanded the unconditional release of all those arrested.

The statement, issued on October 27, 2026, said that after coming to power in West Bengal by exploiting the manoeuvres of BJP-RSS-backed Gyanesh Kumar, the BJP-RSS government was seeking to impose the Uttar Pradesh model of governance in the state. It pointed to the continuation of bulldozer rule, mob lynchings and encounter killings.

The CPI(ML) said that during the Sharadotsav festivities, attacks on Left bookstalls sought to suppress the constitutional right to freedom of expression, provoking public resistance. It also accused the government of failing to fulfil its pre-election promises within the first five and a half months of its rule, fuelling growing anger among working people and marginalised sections.

Condemning the arrests as vindictive and illegal, CPI(ML) Liberation accused the government of using the state police and the BJP-RSS’s saffron brigade to target critics, including popular YouTubers, People’s Science activists and social media voices speaking out against injustice.

The Party reiterated its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested and called on people to resist the state government's attempts to curtail freedom of expression.
