Nadia Protest Demands Jobs and Housing

CPI(ML) organised a protest and deputation to the Naopara I Gram Panchayat in Nadia district on July 8 demanding implementation of the rural employment scheme, commencement of the rural housing scheme, repair of dilapidated roads and fulfilment of a nine-point charter of demands. While the deputation was submitted inside the office, a protest demonstration was held outside. The delegation held detailed discussions with the Panchayat authorities on the various demands.

During the discussions, the Pradhan assured the delegation that work under the rural employment scheme would begin in the area within the next ten days. Verification for beneficiaries under the rural housing scheme would also begin within the next couple of days. However, the Pradhan stated that no new job cards were being issued following instructions from higher authorities. CPI(ML) representatives said they would take up the issue with the Block administration.

The delegation also raised the issue of many beneficiaries not receiving assistance under the Annapurna scheme. The Pradhan said that the delay was due to errors in the application forms and assured that the Panchayat would verify and rectify them without requiring applicants to submit fresh forms.

The delegation gave the Panchayat one week's time to act on the demands and announced that it would return to review the progress if the assurances were not implemented.
