You Shut Down Jantar Mantar, Thousands of Jantar Mantars Will Bloom Everywhere!

CPI(ML) Liberation strongly condemns the Modi government’s move to denotify Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. Having turned Delhi into a militarised fortress and unleashed colonial style police repression against students, youth, activists and citizens demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the scrapping of the unconstitutional and arbitrary SIR process that has disenfranchised crores of citizens, the Modi-Shah regime has now moved to shut down one of the last remaining popular spaces for democratic protest in the national capital.

This move comes immediately after a Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice of India called for an alternative to Jantar Mantar for protests in Delhi on October 9.

From Boat Club to India Gate, from the Red Fort to Jantar Mantar, and now to the remote corners of Delhi, successive restrictions have systematically pushed democratic protests further and further away from Parliament, the very centre of people’s representation. This assault on the people, their democratic aspirations and their struggles will not succeed. If the regime thinks that shutting down Jantar Mantar will silence people protesting vote theft, mass disenfranchisement, attacks on democracy and the denial of people’s livelihoods, it must remember one thing: close Jantar Mantar, and thousands of Jantar Mantars will emerge everywhere!

The students, youth, activists and ordinary citizens who have confronted the regime’s repression over the past few days have already shown that no barricade, mass detention or police crackdown can break the people’s resolve.

CPI(ML) Liberation demands the immediate withdrawal of this anti-democratic order and an end to the criminalisation and suppression of peaceful protest.
